Athaliah is the mother of King Ahaziah of Judah. When her son was killed in a revolt, Athaliah seized the throne and executed all other possible claimants. She wanted to ensure no heirs remained from the House of David. But one infant was surreptitiously rescued from the massacre, Athaliah\u2019s grandson Joash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our sages suggest that Joash was raised by his aunt and uncle (the High Priest Jehoiada) within the Temple itself until the age of six when his existence was revealed, and he was installed as King of Judah. Athaliah\u2019s attempt to overthrow the installation of Joash was met with execution.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was in Joash\u2019s early reign that he established a model for Temple fundraising that would provide the means to repair and restore the Holy Temple, which, as I mentioned in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/author\/46656\/post\/64018\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a previous post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was a model that lacked fiscal accountability.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Joash, as a young ruler, eventually fell under the influence of the Baal priests and he ultimately abandoned God to serve Baal. The weakened leadership of Judah opened the door for Hazael, king of Syria, to invade the Judean kingdom. Capitalizing on the absence of fiscal accountability, Joash raided the Temple treasury to bribe Hazael to return the newly seized land. The people turned against Joash and ultimately assassinated him. Cue the credits. Well, not so quickly, because the Davidic dynasty persisted with the succession to the throne of Joash\u2019s son Amaziah. OK, cue the sequel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That Athaliah\u2019s attempt to end the Davidic dynasty failed is no surprise. She evidently did not know or chose to disbelieve God\u2019s promise to the Jewish people and to David himself that the Messiah would come from the House of David. And as so often in Jewish history, from near annihilation the Davidic dynasty remains intact today. Genealogical studies have purportedly confirmed father to son traditions of Davidic lineage, although, not surprisingly, there is some disagreement about the validity of results.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Ultimately, whether one takes comfort in, or sees danger in knowing the Davidic lineage, it is inconsequential to the outcome. For, as the Mishna says, \u201cDuring the days of King Messiah, when he will be secure in his monarchy, and all of Israel will gather about him, everyone\u2019s genealogy will be clarified by him, by means of the Holy Spirit which will rest upon him. Those with a pedigree will be confirmed, and lineage will be made known, by means of the Holy Spirit (Mishnah Torah, Melachim 12:3).\u201d And, in the words of Maimonides, this \u201cI believe with perfect faith\" (Maimonides\u2019 <em>Ani Ma\u2019amin<\/em>), and though the genealogy is a fascinating pursuit, it\u2019s acceptance or denial won\u2019t change my own certainty of the Messianic Let\u2019s remind ourselves:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omri was Ahab\u2019s father. He was an army commander who staged a coup and became king of the Kingdom of Israel during one of the civil wars that were prone to happen in that kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahab of course is well-known for marrying Jezebel and bringing the practices of Ba\u2019al worship into the kingdom. He had 70 sons (who were killed by Jehu \u2013 a story in Kings II but not in Chronicles), so it is highly possible that Athaliah\u2019s mother was someone other than Jezebel.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles, Athaliah is introduced as the reason Jehoram followed the practices of the kings of Israel. In other words, he did not just marry into the \u2018royal\u2019 family of Israel, but took on their practices, which Athaliah presumably brought with her. This is what the prophet castigated Jehoshaphat for \u2013 while his intentions to attempt to unify the two kingdoms may have been good, the results from a religious point of view were disastrous; the marriage brought idolatry into the royal Davidic household and into the Temple itself for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So in the context of these verses (2 Kings: 8:18; 2 Chronicles 21:6), Athaliah is truly Ahab\u2019s daughter even if not Jezebel\u2019s: just as Ahab married Jezebel of Tyre and brought her practices to Israel, Athaliah brings these to Judah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the second mention of Athaliah, she is called \u201cdaughter of King Omri of Israel\u201d (2 Kings 8:26; 2 Chronicles 22:2). Here the context is Athaliah as the queen mother, the \u2018gevirah\u2019. The gevirah was not merely a ceremonial position in ancient royal dynasties, she usually held a lot of power. But it was still the power behind the throne.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here she shows that she is the daughter of Omri \u2013 a military commander who seized the opportunity to grab the throne and killed anyone in his way to do so. The righteous king Jehoshaphat leaves an absolute mess with his alliance with Ahab. His hand-picked successor, Jehoram, is evil. God punishes Joram with a gruesome bowel disease. Achaziah, his son, reigns only one year and is killed by Yehu in the north as part of the destruction of the house of Omri. Ataliah, the daughter of Ahab, murders the entire remaining royal family and assumes the queenship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is one glimmer of hope in this dark time. Jehoshabeath (or Jehoshaba in II Kings) the daughter of King Joram hides her nephew- Joash from her vindictive mother. Until this point we know nothing of this princess and we do not hear anything about her afterwards. It is interesting that in her brief verse the text chooses to describe her lineage twice:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Jehoshabeath, daughter of the king<\/span><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spirited away Ahaziah\u2019s son Joash from among the princes who were being slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Jehoshabeath, daughter of King Jehoram, wife of the priest Jehoiada\u2014she was the sister of Ahaziah\u2014kept him hidden from Athaliah so that he was not put to death (verse 11).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does the text emphasize all of this? Most likely, the text is further enhancing her heroic acts. Despite her lineage - daughter of an evil king, sister of an evil king, daughter of an evil queen - she realizes what she must do to save the family. Even her husband, the High Priest, does not act until she brings Joash to the safety of the Temple. Her grandfather Jehoshaphat appointed her father Jehoram because he was the first born, but did not look at his character.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jehoshabeath should have been a nothing among this group of evildoers, but she chose to act beyond her status and do the right thing. It is no surprise that her name comes from the same name as her grandfather Jehoshaphat. She helps return the line back to how it was before Jehoshaphat made his fatal errors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This double introduction after we have already met her is echoed later on by the author of the scroll of Esther. In chapter 2, after we already have met her, the titular character, Esther, is about to be brought before King Ahasueros and the text again describes her lineage:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the turn came for Esther daughter of Abihail\u2014the uncle of Mordecai, who had adopted her as his own daughter\u2014to go to the king, she did not ask for anything but what Hegai, the king\u2019s eunuch, guardian of the women, advised. Yet Esther won the admiration of all who saw her (Esther 2:15).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This second introduction links the two heroic women. The commentary attributed to a student of Se`adyah Gaon first identified a serious discrepancy: When Jehoram ascended the throne, he was 32 years old (21:5) and he ruled for 8 years \u201cand departed unpraised\u201d (21:20), which would have made him 40 when he died. Could a 40-year-old man have a 42-year-old son?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak posed the same question, but offered a solution via the parallel passage in Kings, which reads: \u201cAhaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year; his mother\u2019s name was Athaliah daughter of King Omri of Israel\u201d (2 Kings 8:26). While that resolves the discrepancy we noted, it raises a new problem: Why would Chronicles change 22 to 42? Radak (in 2 Kings) had an answer for that, too: Jehoram ruled only 8 years until \u201cthe L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> afflicted him with an incurable disease of the bowels\u201d (2 Chr. 21:18), at which time Ahaziah, at the age of 22, had to take over for him. Twenty years later, Ahaziah, now 42, assumed an independent reign, which lasted but a single year.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim (on 2 Kings), was not persuaded: \u201cBut Ahaziah died alongside Jehoram son of Ahab, and [the latter] ruled only 12 years, so how is it possible that there were another 20 years in between?\u201d Relying on <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seder Olam<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the definitive early rabbinic work on chronology, he explained:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He [Ahaziah] reigned 42 years after the start of Omri\u2019s dynasty. In other words, it was decreed that the House of Omri would reign only 42 years, after which his memory and that of his sons would be erased from the earth. Ahaziah, who was a grandson to Omri on his mother\u2019s side [Athaliah] began to rule in that [42<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] year and was killed together with a [descendant] of Ahab to fulfill the verse: \u201cI will cut off from Israel every male belonging to Ahab\u201d (1 Kings 21:21). This is why we are told that \u201chis mother was Athaliah, daughter of Omri\u201d and that \u201che followed the practices of the house of Ahab.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as the minor discrepancy that Athaliah was actually Ahab\u2019s daughter and Omri\u2019s granddaughter, Malbim relied on a well-known rabbinic adage: \u201cGrandchildren are The history of King Ahaziah of Judah is also told in 2 Kings 8:25-29, and in 9:15-17, 27-28. Athaliah\u2019s ascent to the throne is related in 2 Kings 11:1-3.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>No coincidence.<\/em> It\u2019s not bad luck that Ahaziah was visiting King Joram of Israel precisely during the rebellion of Jehu. \u201cGod caused the downfall of Ahaziah because he visited Joram\u201d (verse 7).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The end of the covenant<\/em>. Jehu\u2019s rebellion puts an end not only to the house of Ahab, but also to the historical episode of covenant between Judah and Israel. We\u2019ve heard what the Chronicler thought of these connections in recent chapters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Jehoshabeath<\/em>, the full picture. Chronicles adds important background information about Jehoshabeath, the rescuer (Jehosheba in Kings). Jehoshabeath is not just the sister of King Ahaziah, which is information that Kings supplies, but she is also the wife of Jehoiada the priest.
