His grandmother, Athaliah, had killed the members of the royal family, but Joash was shielded by the high priest Jehoiada.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jehoiada used the shifts of the priests and the Levites in the Temple to protect Joash. They were armed and instructed to kill anyone who entered the Sanctuary. We then read that both those from the outgoing shift and the incoming shift remained in the Temple:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Levites and all Judah did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered: each took his men\u2014those who were on duty that week and those who were off duty that week, for Jehoiada the priest had not dismissed the divisions.\u201d (II Chronicles 23:8)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cdivisions\u201d in the verse refer to those shifts. The Hebrew word used here is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machlekot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machloket<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in singular. The word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machloket<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is likely more familiar today in the sense it was used in the Talmud: \u201cdispute\u201d or \u201cdisagreement\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most famous uses of the word is in the Mishna:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machloket<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that is for the sake of Heaven, will in the end endure; But one that is not for the sake of Heaven, will not endure. Which is the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machloket<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that is for the sake of Heaven? Such was the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machloket<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Hillel and Shammai. And which is the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machloket<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that is not for the sake of Heaven? Such was the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machloket<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Korah and all his congregation.\u201d (Avot 5:17)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machloket<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in this mishna is translated as \u201cdispute\u201d or \u201ccontroversy.\u201d However, some scholars, citing its usage in Chronicles, say the word should rather be translated as \u201cdivision\u201d, meaning the division of the groups from opposite sides of the debates. They point out that it doesn\u2019t make sense that the mishna intended the sense of \u201cdispute\u201d here, because disputes \"for the sake of heaven\" should be easy to resolve by good arguments (so they won\u2019t endure). But disputes not for the sake of heaven, where personal and external factors are involved, will not be settled by claims of logic (and will endure).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if we use the meaning \u201cdivisions\u201d (as in groups debating an issue), there is no such problem. Those groups that are organized for a positive purpose will endure. The mishna counts the schools of Hillel and Shamai as such groups, and it would certainly apply to those priests and Levites who protected the young king Joash as well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>image:\u00a0Rabbi Hillel and the gentile. While the parallel passage in 2 Kings reads only: \u201cIn the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the chiefs of the hundreds of the Carites and of the guards, and had them come to him in the House of the LORD\u201d (11:4), our chapter provides the names of those chiefs: \u201cIn the seventh year, Jehoiada took courage and brought the chiefs of the hundreds, Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri, into a compact with him\u201d (1).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The subject of the compact was the distribution of labor in the Temple, as follows: \u201cOne third of you, priests and Levites, who are on duty for the week, shall be gatekeepers at the thresholds; another third shall be stationed in the royal palace, and the other third at the Foundation Gate\u201d (4-5). Most significantly, the Hebrew designation for \u201con duty for the week\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba\u2019ei haShabbat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Old JPS translation rendered this as \u201cthat come in on the Sabbath,\u201d indicating that each weekly shift began on Friday evening\u2014 something we would not necessarily have known if we had to rely entirely on the New JPS\u2014 constituting something lost in what later editors probably thought was a more colloquial translation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just why Temple service was regulated according to the Sabbath is not specified\u2014neither here nor in the parallel passage in 2 Kings (11:5)\u2014but we may speculate based on our observations on a previous association between the Sabbath and the Temple\u2019s predecessor, the Tabernacle (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mishkan<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Chapter 23 includes a vow that the people make to Joash: \u201cand the entire assembly made a covenant with the king in the House of God. He said to them, \u201cThe son of the king shall be king according to the promise the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made concerning the sons of David\u201d (verse 3). Joash has the right to be king because God promised that the sons of David will be kings. This is added here in addition to the story told in II Kings 11 to bolster Joash\u2019s case for the throne. This is also an interesting juxtaposition in the story concerning the execution of Athaliah.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Queen enters the Temple courtyard to see what the commotion is all about, and screams treason when she sees her grandson inaugurated as king. Jehoiada, the high priest, orders the army officers to \u201c\u2019Take her out between the ranks, and if anyone follows her, put him to the sword.\u2019 For the priest thought, \u2018Let her not be put to death in the House of the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 (verse 14). This pronouncement echoes the death of Joab, David\u2019s former commander by Solomon. Joab tried to find sanctuary in the Tabernacle, and he was removed before being executed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The text establishes this law and then immediately we read that \u201cAll the people then went to the temple of Baal; they tore it down and smashed its altars and images to bits, and they slew Mattan, the priest of Baal, in front of the altars\u201d (verse 17). Why does the text have to say that Mattan was killed \u201cin front of the altars\u201d? We already know he is in the temple of Baal. The text is juxtaposing the different rules for the house of God and that of idol worship. The treasonous evil queen needed to be removed from the Temple to perverse its sanctity. The changes here in Chronicles expand the role of the priesthood in the events.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Athaliah\u2019s perspective.<\/em> Verses 12-13 are told from the point of view of Athaliah. The reader is invited to see what she sees, and hear in her agonized cry of \u201ctreason, treason\u201d her surprise at discovering that the young prince is alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Safeguarding the holy<\/em>. The story takes place in the Temple, with emphasis on the holy precincts and who is allowed to enter (verses 6, 14, 19).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Evil, but\u2026<\/em> Athaliah is the villain in this story (especially in the events of the previous chapter), but in contrast to other stories, she isn\u2019t rebuked by any prophet, nor are her sins listed for us by the author. Why?
