My understanding is influenced by modern Hebrew in which <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shalal<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u05e9\u05dc\u05dc not only refers to the spoils of war but is also used in the construct form to describe a large, diverse collection of colors, ideas or whatever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how can we compare God\u2019s word to the byproduct of war? It might hint that humans are only receptive to hearing the Divine after being shaken out of our mundane frame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternately, God\u2019s utterance (<em>imratecha<\/em>, as translated by Robert Alter)\u00a0is the raw material of revelation, the barely audible \u201cahhh\u201d heard at Sinai that becomes Torah when internalized and processed by human understanding. Torah emerges from the struggle that occurs when Divine teaching and human reality encounter each other. The product is rich, diverse Torah; we rejoice when it speaks to our minds, hearts, lives. We can compound the joy by continuing the process, bringing the spoils we found into conversation with our own struggles, and leaving the best of our learning for those who come after.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n","image":false,"embedded_video":"","video_duration":"","show_fb_comments":true,"credit_media":""},"tile":{"top_caption":"\u05e9","main_caption":"Struggle and Joy ","main_caption_size":"1","sub_caption":"162.
