When my dad was seven, his older sister contracted polio; her ability to walk, and my grandparents\u2019 faith, were, for the most part, lost together. Kashrut disappeared. Attending shul vanished. Religious hanging art was replaced with a photo of FDR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, something remained. He became a bar mitzvah, married a Jew, circumcised his son, sent his children to religious school, celebrated their bat and b\u2019nei mitzvah, and encouraged us to marry Jews. He would have done more, but my mother was raised secular. Once he retired, he regularly attended Shabbat services and Torah study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When my dad was 67, he was diagnosed with stage 3 GE junction cancer. I was shocked when he told me that it was punishment for not being \u201ca good Jew.\u201d He was a man of high ethics and values; he taught me about justice and equality. He was kind and generous. So what that he ate ham? Did he really think God operated that way? I asked him to look more deeply. He did. And his cancer went into remission for 15 years. At shiva four years ago this very week, a man who hadn\u2019t seen my dad in over 65 years came simply to tell us that my father was the kindest person he had ever known.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":false,"embedded_video":"","video_duration":"","show_fb_comments":true,"credit_media":""},"tile":{"top_caption":"\u05e8","main_caption":"A Good Jew","main_caption_size":"1","sub_caption":"153.
