The speaker stands at the pause in the middle of the verse, the invisible present, with the past extending to the right and the future to the left. The audience is left to figure out how the two parts fit together\u2014just as we may puzzle over the trajectory of our own lives from our early to later years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verse harbors an implicit argument: God, since You were the One who made me, You should give me the power to study Your laws, the laws that You gave people to live by. This is, after all, the purpose of Creation! Note that the speaker commands God to act; the Amidah prayer picks up on this insistent, importunate register.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remarkably, the two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>vavs<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the verse function in entirely different ways to support the meaning of the two halves. They participate in the chiastic parallelism (noun-verb-and-verb \/\/ verb-and-verb-noun) while shaping the differences between them. The first, conversive <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (turning a future verb to the past tense) is lovingly additive, slowing: You didn&#8217;t merely make me, you established my existence. The second <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>vav<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is purposive, propulsive: Give me brains so that I can start learning.
