In our verse, the commandments are the objects towards which the speaker&#8217;s hands are raised and are also the objects of the speaker&#8217;s &#8220;love.&#8221; Instead of &#8220;loving God,&#8221; as the Book of Deuteronomy enjoins regularly, the speaker loves the commandments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same holds for &#8220;raising hands&#8221; (here translated as \u201creaching out\u201d). Elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible, this is a gesture of prayer, with hands directed towards God, as the lamenting community instructs the bereft daughter or Zion, &#8220;raise your hands towards God&#8221; in petition (Lamentations 2:19). Here, instead, the speaker directs this gesture towards the commandments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps this substitution, here and throughout the Psalm, indicates that the speaker finds it impossible to enter an unmediated relationship with God. Rather than abandon hope to despair, the speaker has found religious value in study and action. Loving the commandments and making them the objects of devotion can pave the road towards God.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":false,"embedded_video":"","video_duration":"","show_fb_comments":true,"credit_media":""},"tile":{"top_caption":"\u05d5","main_caption":"Paving The Road","main_caption_size":"1","sub_caption":"48.
