In the book of Genesis, it primarily refers to the love between man and woman, for example: &#8220;\u2026 a man leaves his father and mother and clings (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">v&#8217;davak<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to his wife&#8230;&#8221; (Gen. 2:24). In Deuteronomy, the term refers to how Israel should love God, as in the verse, &#8220;By loving the LORD your God, heeding His commands, and holding fast (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ul&#8217;davka<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to Him\u2026&#8221; (Deut. 30:20). \u00a0 Both usages of the word are prevalent throughout the Tanach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our verse, the usage of this root has two novelties. First, it is the only occurrence in Tanach where the word is written in the perfect form: \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">davak&#8217;ti<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d This indicates the intense love of the psalmist. Secondly, the object of the love in this verse is not a woman, or even God, but God\u2019s words, Torah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verse ends with the psalmist\u2019s prayer that God shouldn&#8217;t put him to shame. Loving someone dictates our willingness to leave our comfort zone in order to fulfill the desires of our loved one. Nevertheless, the psalmist asks if God could take his sensitivities into consideration.
