Only two psalms ago (i.e., 117), we faced the challenge of making substantial remarks about the Tanakh\u2019s shortest chapter (just 2 verses). Now we face the test of commenting succinctly on its lengthiest chapter (176 verses), which Jewish scholars have nicknamed, in Aramaic, \u201cthe eight facets\u201d (<\/span>t\u2019manya apei<\/span><\/em>), due to its eightfold repetition of the Hebrew alphabet.<\/span><\/p>\n

While many of its manifold verses resonate with me, I have a favorite trio that give felicitous expression to the undying hope that has kept the Jewish people alive throughout a tumultuous history.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

49. Remember Your word to Your servant through which You have given me hope.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

50. This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your promise has preserved me.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

51. Though the arrogant have cruelly mocked me, I have not swerved from Your teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

Individual Jews, Jewish communities, and, occasionally, the whole Jewish nation have suffered affliction and, yet, were preserved, often miraculously. Individual Jews, Jewish communities, and, occasionally, the whole Jewish nation have been cruelly mocked for their beliefs and, yet, have not swerved from God\u2019s teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n

A close reading of the Hebrew text, however, puts the translation of verse 51 to the test. I do not often prefer the ArtScroll translation over those of JPS or Robert Alter but this time I do: \u201cThat from which the faithful have not swerved is not a generic teaching, albeit divinely inspired. It is the Torah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
