David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\nThe author of this psalm did not incorporate his name into the text of the chapter. The Rabbis of the Talmud and Midrash believed it was composed by King David.<\/p>\n<p>This is the most uplifting, dear and important of all psalms. It was understood to be King David\u2019s personal prayer to God. David deeply desired to permanently cleave unto God\u2019s ways and commandments, so that he would be meritorious of God\u2019s eternal sweetness.<\/p>\n<p><em>Genre: <\/em><br \/>\nPsalm of Wisdom&#8211;This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<br \/>\nAcrostic&#8211;A literary composition in which the writer has used the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in their order as the initial letters for a sequence of verses. i.e \u05d0.\u05d1.\u05d2.\u05d3<\/p>\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\nThis psalm was composed as a prayer for success in spiritual matters and completeness in Torah achievement. It is arranged in alphabetical order, eight verses per letter, totaling one hundred seventy-six verses. As such, it is the longest chapter of Tehillim (Psalms). Each verse contains one of the following ten words: Torah, derech (path), chok (law), mitzvah (command), mishpat (judgement), eidut (testimonial), pekud (precept), tzedek (righteousness), dibbur (speech), and amirah (recitation). All of the above refer to the Torah and its laws. The singer here intends to strengthen the hand of those who study and observe the Torah, to help them persevere and overcome all trials.<\/p>\n<p><em>Introductory Word:<\/em><br \/>\n\u05d0\u05e9\u05e8\u05d9&#8211;Ashrei&#8211;Praiseworthy&#8211;Happy<\/p>\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim&#8211;When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\nFor the healing of one\u2019s arm&#8211;Say the entire psalm, but in the following order of the letters: alef\/tav, bet\/shin, gimmel, resh, dalet, kof, hei, tzadi, vav\/pei, zayin\/ayin, chet\/samech, tet\/nun, yud\/mem, kaf\/lamed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em><br \/>\nVerse 162: \u201cI am happy with Your word like one who finds great gain.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Talmud, Shabbat 130a, teaches that any commandment which the Jewish people accepted upon themselves with great joy, such as Brit Milah (circumcision), is still being performed with joy today.
