A highly creative rendition of our psalm was proposed by Yehudah Eisenberg in an article that appeared in the journal of religious education in Israel, <\/span>Bisdei Chemed<\/span><\/em>, vol. 9-10 (1995). Combining elements of chapters 84 (\u201cMy soul yearns and longs for the precincts of the Lord\u201d v.3), 118, and 122 (\u201cI rejoiced when I was told let us go to the House of the Lord,\u201d v.1), Dr. Eisenberg drew a composite portrait of the yearning for Jerusalem, in general, and a festive pilgrimage to Jerusalem, in particular. In our psalm, he discovered a ceremonious exchange that may have taken place between a pilgrim and a participating priest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The pilgrim would say: \u201cOpen the gates of victory (<\/span>tzedek<\/span><\/em>) for me that I may enter them and praise the Lord\u201d (19), and the priest would reply: \u201cThis is the gateway to the Lord \u2014 the victorious shall enter through it\u201d (20). To which the pilgrim would respond: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>I praise You, for You have answered me, and have become my deliverance\u201d (21), and the priest would conclude: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>May he who enters be blessed in the name of the Lord; we bless you from the House of the Lord\u201d (26).<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, supporters of Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem might have a problem with the JPS translation of v.19 of our psalm (cited above), since they, presumably, render <\/span>tzedek<\/span><\/em> as either justice (Alter) or righteousness (ArtScroll), but one may suppose that its patients, who have benefited from its resources since its founding in 1902, would consider their treatments a victory.<\/span><\/p>\n
