Psalm 118:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nUnknown; perhaps King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Thanksgiving–This psalm emphasizes gratitude for what God has done.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nAccording to tradition, this chapter, like the previous one, was prophetically written as thanksgiving for future acts of deliverance of the Jewish people, perhaps an allusion to the days of Mashiach (Messiah). Alternatively, it may be referring to none other than King David himself, who gave thanks to the Almighty upon his being anointed as king.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty-nine verses, subdivided into four parts. Together with the previous psalm, it comprises the final section of Hallel.
\nIn verses 1-4, the psalmist calls upon the Jewish people to give thanks to God for His eternal kindness.
\nIn verses 5-14, he proudly proclaims that he has placed his trust in God, his savior.
\nIn verses 15-18, he tells of singing which can be heard among the righteous.
\nIn verses 19-29, he beautifully crafts communal, responsive exclamations of praise to the Almighty for His salvation.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say;<\/em>
\nFor appearing before a judge (say verses 26-29)–Verse 26 states: \u201cBlessed be he who comes in the Name of Adonoy; we bless you from Adonoy\u2019s House.\u201d
\nTo hope for a heretic to repent–Verse 8 states: \u201cIt is better to take refuge in Adonoy than to trust in man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 21: \u201cI thank You for You answered me.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Pesachim 119a, records that King David offered this verse in thanks to the Almighty for his being anointed as king by the prophet Shmuel (Samuel). Samuel was dispatched by God to anoint one of–without specification as to which–Yishai\u2019s (Jesse\u2019s) eight sons as king. David, a humble shepherd and the youngest of them, was thought to be the least qualified for the post. He thus thanked God upon being chosen for this lofty position. (See the above Talmudic passage for an elaborate treatment of the ensuing verses as a conversation between Shumel, Yishai, David, and his brothers).
\nVerse 27: \u201cBind the festival sacrifices with ropes (until they are brought) to the corners of the Altar.\u201d
\nThe talmud, Sukkah 45a, teaches that one who takes the Lulav (palm branch) with its accompanying species–Etrog (citron), Hadas (myrtle) and Aravah (willow)–on the holiday of Sukkot is regarded as if he has personally built an altar and offered a sacrifice upon it. The Talmud here is employing a play on words, as \u201cavotim\u201d (\u201cropes\u201d) in the above verse is the same word used in the Torah to describe the hadas (myrtle).<\/p>\n
