“Open for me the gates of righteousness \u2026” (Psalm 118:19)<\/p>\n

The gate is locking \u2014
\nOr can it be that I have locked You, my God,
\nOut of my life?<\/p>\n

The machzor our fathers opened so easily, so lightly,
\nIs heavy in my hands,
\nMy God.
\nIts tightly closed gate
\nIs almost impenetrable for me;
\nHow can I get through it
\nTo You
\nWhen my own gate is rusty, immovable,
\nWhen my own gate does not budge, held back
\nBy boulders from the avalanche
\nOf my failures and my doubts?<\/p>\n

The machzor’s ancient words
\nAre chiseled stones in the walls of a fortified city,
\nToo high to be scaled.
\nAnd I am just a simple foot-soldier
\nWho barely passed basic training,
\nUnequipped with the weaponry
\nNeeded to launch an assault \u2014
\nWithout artillery,
\nWithout a rifle,
\nWithout even a pocket-knife.
\nI wear a uniform,
\nBut no uniform can camouflage
\nThe sins of my youth
\nAnd the sins of my old age,
\nMy God.<\/p>\n

The gate is locking \u2014
\nOr can it be that I have locked myself
\nOutside,
\nRefusing to use the key
\nYou have entrusted into my hands,
\nMy God?<\/p>\n

Open for me a gate,
\nYou who open all gates,
