How much can one say about a psalm that consists of only two verses? It is, indeed, not only the briefest psalm, but the shortest chapter in Tanakh\u2014a fact that did not escape notice by the exegetes who, nevertheless, had much more than that to say about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Radak wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n

This psalm, consisting of but two verses, is about the Messianic age. Its containment in just two verses symbolizes that all people will be in either one of two groups: Israel will persist in its Torah, while the other nations will flock together about the seven [Noahide] commandments. All will praise God because all will come then to recognize Him. And since [the psalmist] said \u201cPraise God\u201d directed at Israel, he foresaw prophetically that all the nations will praise God, so he invited them to join [together with Israel] in praising Him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim connected our psalm to one of its predecessors, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n

He stated that God fulfilled his request by rescuing Israel. Likewise, all the nations that were taken captive by Sennacherib and whom he brought before Jerusalem, will praise God \u201cfor great is His steadfast love toward us\u201d (2), because that spared the lives of those captives as well, as stated: \u201cEgypt\u2019s wealth and Nubia\u2019s gains and Sabaites, long of limb, shall pass over to you and be yours, pass over and follow you in fetters, bow low to you and reverently address you: \u201cOnly among you is God, There is no other god at all!\u201d (Isaiah 45:14). All of the nations that fought Sennacherib praised God for this, to wit: \u201cAnd what will he answer the messengers of any nation? That Zion has been established by the LORD: In it, the needy of His people shall find shelter\u201d (Isaiah 14:32).<\/span><\/p>\n

Pursuant to his saying \u201cTo Your name bring glory\u201d (Ps. 115:1), he now said \u201cPraise the Lord all you nations,\u201d and pursuant to \u201cFor the sake of Your love\u201d (ibid.), he now said \u201cFor great is His steadfast love toward us,\u201d and pursuant to\u00a0 \u201cand Your faithfulness\u201d (ibid.), he said \u201cthe faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.\u201d In other words, His promise abides forever.<\/span><\/p>\n
