This seems to contradict our psalm that declares: \u201cI love the Lord for He hears my voice, my pleas\u201d (1), with the concomitant implication that if He chose not to hear, then our psalmist\u2019s love would be misplaced. Robert Alter noted that the unusual syntax of the verse\u2014placing \u201cthe Lord\u201d at the end of the first verset\u2014allows for a different interpretation: \u201cI love when the Lord hears\u201d (273). This ambiguity is reflected in traditional exegesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aramaic Tragum rendered the verse: \u201cI love [Him], for the Lord will hear my voice, my prayer,\u201d while Rashi commented: \u201cI wished that God would hear my voice.\u201d Both interpretations are cited by Ibn Ezra: \u201cThe meaning is: How much would I love for God to hear my voice when I supplicate [Him]. Others say that its meaning is, I love the Lord, because He hears the voice of my supplication.\u201d Radak explained: \u201cIt is incumbent upon me to love Him because He hears my voice and my pleas whenever I call to Him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only Malbim, typically, takes a very different approach:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when I am not in distress, when I am healthy and whole, even at such times I love to supplicate because God will hear my voice. In other words, I love to supplicate and pray to God because He always hears my voice; not only does He hear me when I call, but \u201cHe turns His ear to me whenever I call\u201d (2). Just as one is attentive to an only child and listens for his voice because he enjoys its sound and wants to hear his supplication\u2026 How much more so now that \u201cThe bonds of death encompassed me; the torments of Sheol overtook me, [and] I came upon trouble and sorrow\u201d (3), will I \u201cinvoke the name of the Lord \u201c
