In the previous chapter we spoke of the idols of the pagan nations having ears they do not hear and eyes that do that see. Psalm 116 opens with the difference with God, &#8220;I love the LORD for He hears my voice, my pleas\/ for He turns His ear to me whenever I call.&#8221; (1-2). God&#8217;s ability to hear and listen is a reason for the author to love God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This love also mirrors the call to love God from the second part of the Shma prayer: &#8220;And you shall love God with all of your heart and all of your soul&#8221; (Deuteronomy 6:5). This second part provides for the second part of the formula- how one should love God and the result of loving God. Our psalm provides the reason to love God- because he hears. Notice that the author uses the same Hebrew word &#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shma<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; from the first paragraph of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shma<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prayer. &#8220;Hear O Israel.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the people hear the call that God is one, then God will hear them as well, and when God hears the people, they will love
