Psalm 116:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nUnknown; perhaps King David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid might have written this psalm after he was finally saved from Saul. The psalmist thanks God for saving him in his time of great distress and he reaffirms his belief that true salvation can only come from God.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Thanksgiving–This psalm emphasizes gratitude for what God has done.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nThis psalm depicts the power of prayer as entreaty. The singer, tradition tells us, foresaw that the nations would eventually claim that the prayers of Israel are in vain. He therefore composed this psalm in an attempt to disprove this assertion, as he believed that this prayers would not be returned empty. Rather, he reasoned, God would hear the voice of the Israelites as they sing this psalm, and then redeem them.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of nineteen verses, subdivided into three parts. A section of Hallel, it gives expression to the psalmist\u2019s gratitude to the Almighty, as he vows to bring a Korban Todah (Thanksgiving Offering). Like the previous psalm, this one too contains several refrains and repetitions, perhaps indicating that it too was originally intended to be recited responsively.<\/p>\n

In verses 1-4, the psalmist proudly exclaims that God hears his voice, and further calls out to God to heed his prayer now, as he is in great distress.
\nIn verses 5-11, he recognizes God\u2019s mercy and salvation.
\nIn verses 12-19, he vows to fulfill his promise of a peace offering and to call out in the name of God.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say;<\/em>
\nTo prevent unnatural or sudden death–Verse 8 states: \u201cFor You freed my soul from death, my eye from tears, my foot from stumbling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 1: \u201cI love when Adonoy hears my voice, my prayers.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Pesachim 118b, in expounding upon this verse, tells us that the Israelites asked God: When are they beloved? God in turn responded: \u201cWhen I hear their voice, their supplication.\u201d
\nVerse 13: \u201cThe cup of deliverance I will raise.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Pesachim 119b, teaches that at the Seudat Mashiach (festive meal in honor of Messiah\u2019s arrival), King David himself will lead all present in Birkat HaMazon (Grace after Meals). As David incorporated many psalms of thanksgiving in Sefer Tehillim (Book of Psalms), build the City of David (Jerusalem), and was privileged to have his son erect the Beit HaMikdash (Temple), it is only fitting that he was bestowed with this honor, as all three of these themes are central to Birkat HaMazon.<\/p>\n
