Whether reciting the full Hallel (Chapter 133-118) on major Jewish festivals, or the \u201chalf\u201d Hallel on Rosh Chodesh, which excludes the first half of Chapter 115, the prayer will include the following descriptive \u201cwho is a Jew\u201d language.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Maharal, the psalmist categorizes the Jewish people into three groups in verses 9-11, relating to their motive for worship:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cIsrael\u201d are those who serve God primarily as a reaction to the fact of them being God\u2019s children \u2013 the beloved nation chosen by God;<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cThe House of Aaron\u201d are comprised of the Kohanim \u2013 the priestly leaders designated to serve God in the Temple for all time; and<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cThose who serve God out of fear and awe\u201d refer to scholars and converts who come to it through depth of learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    All three groups are entreated to trust in God, regardless of their motive and know that He will be their help and their shield.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch, however, understands these distinctions by purpose rather than motive. In Hirsch\u2019s view:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Israel refers to those who went out among the nations of the world to spread the message of God;<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. The House of Aaron has a similar role to Israel, but more locally, within the Jewish nation; and<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Those who fear God include every individual whose task is to conduct themselves in accordance with God\u2019s precepts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      In 115:12-13, these groupings are revisited with similar language: \u201cGod, who has remembered us, will bless the House of Israel\u2026the House of Aaron\u2026.(and) those who fear God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

      Says, Hirsch, if the Jewish people are collectively global and local leaders, as well as individuals striving to conduct themselves devoutly, then we can individually and collectively trust that God \u201cwill assist the descendants of Aaron in the fulfillment of their task in the midst of Israel and aid every individual in their endeavours to spiritually refine themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

      The passages could have said merely, \u201cthe entirety of the nation that serves God can trust that God will help and shield them.\u201d But in both places in this chapter the distinctions within the nation are enumerated. By specifically confirming God\u2019s blessings to each group (and by extension each individual) according to their special characteristics, we are reminded of the complexity of the Jewish people and the diverse ways in which we serve God with a common purpose and equal share in God\u2019s
