Idolatry is such an anathema to the Torah that even though it was prohibited in exacting detail in the second of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-5), God saw fit to reiterate it immediately thereafter, saying: \u201cThus shall you say to the Israelites: You yourselves saw that I spoke to you from the very heavens: With Me, therefore, you shall not make any gods of silver, nor shall you make for yourselves any gods of gold\u201d (19-20). The prophets, too, railed against idolatry, which they generally denounced as the theological equivalent of infidelity or adultery. See, e.g., Hosea 3:1: \u201cThe LORD said to me further, \u201cGo, befriend a woman who, while befriended by a companion, consorts with others, just as the Lord befriends the Israelites, but they turn to other gods\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Here, however, it is the futility of idolatry that is emphasized, in a manner that is duplicated in yet another, later psalm, albeit with some significant differences that I leave you to contemplate.<\/span><\/p>\n
