These events then generated other extraordinary phenomena: \u201cMountains skipped like rams, hills like sheep\u201d (4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The psalmist even anticipated our perplexity over these unnatural acts and asked, rhetorically, \u201cWhat alarmed you, O sea, that you fled, Jordan, that you ran backward; mountains, that you skipped like rams, hills, like sheep?\u201d (5-6). To which he replied: \u201cTremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flinty rock into a fountain\u201d (7-8).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crossing of the Red Sea, as is well known, was celebrated in song immediately after its occurrence in what has come to be called \u201cThe Song at the Sea\u201d (\u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">az yashir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Exodus 15:1 ff.). In contrast, the crossing of the Jordan, narrated in Joshua 3-4, was not accompanied by a poetic tribute. A close reading of the Book of Joshua, however, reveals an indirect concatenation of these two remarkable events\u2014if not by Israel, then, curiously, by their Canaanite opponents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rahab, the hotelier of Jericho who enabled the two Israelite spies to evade capture, addressed the local morale saying, \u201cFor we have heard <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how the Lord dried up the waters of the Sea of Reeds <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for you when you left Egypt\u2026 When we heard about it, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we lost heart<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>no man had any more spirit left<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of you\u201d (Joshua 2:10). Compare Scripture\u2019s own follow-up to the Jordan crossing: \u201cWhen all the kings of the Amorites on the western side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites near the Sea, heard <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>how the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the sake of the Israelites until they crossed over, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they lost heart<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>no spirit was left in them<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of the Israelites\u201d
