“When Israel came out of the land of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of a foreign language, Judah became His holy sanctuary, Israel His dominion.” (Psalm 114:1-2)<\/p>\n

\nSrulik left last night.
\nA hasty hug; a quick good-bye;
\nAnd he\u2019s gone.<\/p>\n

We belonged to the same master
\nWho hit us and whipped us and cursed us both,
\n\u201cJewish dog.\u201d
\nWhich really brought us together,
\nTwo half-moons lighting up our dark \u2014
\nHe the Jew, I the dog.<\/p>\n

I was leashed to the gate to guard the slaves,
\nTo make sure they couldn\u2019t leave the ghetto;
\nBut me and Srulik would sneak out
\nUnder the fence in the evenings
\nTo play hide-and-seek by the river.<\/p>\n

My master never, never gave me enough to eat,
\nSo me and Srulik would go fishing.
\nIf we caught a fish with the little net he made,
\nWe\u2019d share it \u2014 half for me,
\nHalf he\u2019d save for his sisters.
\nOnce, we hid in the reeds and bulrushes,
\nWatching herons feed in the still waters,
\nThen rise and fly away in flocks of white and pink.<\/p>\n

But afterwards the Bad Times came,
\nWhen the cradle of the Holy Infant Horus cracked
\nAnd His sacred mother, our Blessed Lady Isis the vulture-headed,
\nFlew away like the herons;
\nRa, the mighty sun-god, was swallowed by the moon;
\nThe eye of the earth turned white-blind,
\nAnd even my master\u2019s staff shattered.<\/p>\n

When the river turned to blood,
\nSrulik gave me his water.<\/p>\n

When lice attacked me, wave after wave,
\nA living, crawling, biting sea,
\nSrulik spent hours combing and brushing my fur.<\/p>\n

When boils covered me, even my nose, even inside my ears,
\nSrulik found herbs to soothe my itching.<\/p>\n

Then came the hail \u2014 that was the worst \u2014
\nArrows of ice with pointed swords of white fire inside;
\nBut Srulik ran out of his hut to find me;
\nHe carried me back to his home
\nWhere I slept next to him on his mat.<\/p>\n

And when darkness enveloped us,
\nA black fog suffocating us alive,
\nSrulik was my light.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re burying my master\u2019s first-born son this morning.
\nBut I \u2014 I mourn my Srulik.<\/p>\n

He left last night, together with all the other Jews.<\/p>\n

A hasty hug. A quick good-bye.<\/p>\n
