With Psalm 113, we encounter the combined term <\/span>hallelu-yah<\/span><\/i> (\u201cpraise God\u201d), the eponymous ancestor of a wide variety of religious songs of praise that have been sung over the last two millennia by adherents of Judaism and Christianity alike (\u201cThe River Jordan is chilly and wide, Hallelujah, milk and honey on the other side, Hallelujah\u201d). Along with its several verbal variations (<\/span>t\u2019hallel, y\u2019hallel<\/span><\/i>), it appears 36 times in Tanakh, each and every one of them in Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n

Radak elaborated:<\/span><\/p>\n

When [the psalmist] wanted to speak about the exodus from Egypt [in Psalm 114], he began with the heroic deeds that God performed in His world by means of His will, in order to elevate the downtrodden and diminish the arrogant, just as He did with Israel and Egypt. He used three forms of [the verb] <\/span>hallel<\/span><\/i> [in the opening verse] to emphasize that we are obliged to offer multiple forms of praise. \u201cThe servants of the Lord\u201d is the invocation, and they are the wise and god-fearing for whom praise is fitting, because they know how to praise Him on account of their wisdom and perception of His name.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim, however, offered a very different perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Rabbi Eliezer ben Azariah (Pesachim 117a), these psalms were recited or composed by [King] Hezekiah and his entourage [when Sennacherib rose against them], and this suits the contents that include a prayer over illness, gratitude for a cure [see 2 Kings 20], and for the overthrow of the enemy.
\n<\/span>According to those who attribute it to an earlier era [i.e., King David], what happened to ancestors occurred to their descendants, too. David also prayed during an illness to be spared from his enemies, as we encounter several times in this book. I prefer to assign it to the miracles that were performed for Hezekiah because those events are [more] explicit in Scripture and accord with the contents of the psalms and with the opinion of the Sages that it was composed in his
