Our<\/span> psalm<\/span><\/a> is the first in a series of psalms which form a clear literary<\/span> unity<\/span><\/a>, known as the <\/span>Hallel<\/em> <\/span>(Psalms 113-118), also called the \u201cEgyptian <\/span>Hallel (Hallel Mitzri<\/span><\/em>)\u201d, <\/span><\/i>because it relates: \u201cWhen Israel went forth from Egypt\u2026\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 114:1<\/span><\/a>). According to<\/span> Tosefta Sukkah 3:2<\/span><\/a>: On eighteen days and on one night (in the year) the entire <\/span>Hallel<\/span><\/i> is repeated. These are the eight days of Sukkot, the eight days of Hanukkah, the first day of Passover, the night of the first day of Passover, and the first day of Shavuot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hallel <\/span><\/i>is <\/span>sung<\/span><\/a> in the synagogue on festive occasions and in the home <\/span>Seder <\/span><\/i>service on Passover. \u201cHallel is the Jewish song of jubilation\u2026To this day, it revives on each Festival season the memory of Divine redemption, and our confidence in future greatness\u201d (Samson Raphael Hirsch quoted by Hertz, <\/span>The Authorized Daily Prayerbook<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>Hallel<\/span><\/i> is also recited on<\/span> Rosh Hodesh<\/span><\/a>. After some debate, it was officially decided in 1974 that <\/span>Hallel<\/span><\/i>, with its traditional blessing, should be recited on Israel Independence Day (5<\/span>th<\/span> of Iyyar).<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud Bavli Pesachim 117a<\/span><\/a> states that <\/span>Hallel<\/span><\/i> was initially recited by Moses and the Israelites when they stood at the shore of the Sea about to open for them to miraculously cross on dry land (see Exodus 14-15). They said: \u201cNot to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name bring glory for the sake of Your love and Your faithfulness\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 115:1<\/span><\/a>). The Holy Spirit responded and said to them: \u201cFor My sake, My own sake, do I act\u201d (<\/span>Isaiah 48:11<\/span><\/a>). Another opinion cited there is that they recited <\/span>Hallel<\/span><\/i> only when Moses and the Israelites safely ascended from the Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

From verses in our psalm,<\/span> Midrash Exodus Rabbah 45:5<\/span><\/a> learns a significant moral lesson. Hillel (at the time of his promotion to be <\/span>Nasi<\/em> <\/span>of the <\/span>Sanhedrin, <\/span><\/i>see<\/span> Talmud Bavli Pesachim 66a<\/span><\/a>) said: My promotion is my demotion, and my demotion is my promotion, for it is better to be told (by God and humans) to go up higher than to be told go down lower. As David asked who is like the Lord, our God, who elevates me (<\/span>ha<\/span>–<\/span>magbihi <\/span><\/em>–<\/span><\/i> Psalms 113:5<\/span><\/a>) to sit. If I elevate myself, I will be demoted, but I will be elevated if I humble myself (<\/span>ha-mashpili –<\/span><\/i> Psalms 113:6<\/span><\/a>) before God and other men.<\/span><\/p>\n

Midrash Tanhuma Achrei Mot 9<\/span><\/a> states that from the time that the sun rises until it sets, the praise of the Holy One, blessed be He, never ceases from its mouth, as it says: \u201cFrom the rising of the sun until its setting, the name of the Lord is praised\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 113:3<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Alfabeta de-Rabbi Akiva 1:9<\/span><\/a> adds that all the Order of Creation (<\/span>kol Sidrei Bereshit<\/span><\/em>) sing the praises of God, as it says: \u201cFrom the rising of the sun until its setting, the name of the Lord is praised\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 113:3<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n
