It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\nThis is the first of the six psalms of Hallel (Service of Praise), recited on Yom Tov (Festivals) and Rosh Chodesh (New Moon), commemorating both past and future redemptions. Recognizing God\u2019s Divine Supervision over all creatures, the singer turns to Israel and declares: \u201cPraise God! Praise, you servants of Adonoy, praise the Name of Adonoy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hallel is divided into three parts. The first section, chapters 113-115, consists of praises and blessings of God\u2019s name pronounced by \u201cHis servants.\u201d The second section, chapter 116, was to be sung in conjunction with the Korban Todah (Thanksgiving offering). The third section, chapters 117 and 118, is a song of praise uttered by those who enter \u201cAdonoy\u2019s House\u201d, a reference to the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\n<p>Psalm 113 consists of nine verses, subdivided into three stanzas of three verses each.<br \/>\nIn verses 1-3, the psalmist calls upon all servants of God to praise Him, adding that God\u2019s name shall be praised forever.<br \/>\nIn verses 4-6, he praises God as dwelling on high and watching over the entire world.<br \/>\nIn verses 7-9, he further extolls God as the One who raises the poor from the degradation and enables barren women to conceive and subsequently rejoice.<\/p>\n<p><em>Introductory Word:<\/em><br \/>\n\u05d4\u05dc\u05dc\u05d5\u05d9-\u05d4&#8211;Halleluyah&#8211;Praise God<br \/>\n\u05d4\u05dc\u05dc\u05d5&#8211;Hallelu&#8211;Praise<\/p>\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim&#8211;When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\nTo destroy idolatry&#8211;Verses 5 and 6 state: \u201cWho is like Adonoy, our God, Who dwells on high, [yet] looks down so low in the heavens and [upon] the earth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em><br \/>\nThe Talmud, Pesachim 117a, after a lengthy debate as to the authorship of Hallel (Service of Praise), comprised of psalms 113-118, concludes that Moshe (Moses) is indeed the author. Also referred to as Hallel HaMitzrei (the Egyptian Hallel), it was, according to tradition, sung by the Israelites upon successfully crossing the Red Sea.<br \/>\nVerses 7-9: \u201cHe raises up the poor from the dust, He returns the barren woman to the home.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Talmud, Pesachim 118b, infers that these verses refer to God as the source of all blessings.
