Good things will happen to those who follow God. In the end the wicked will see what happens and they will be frustrated. Verse 10: \u201cThe wicked man shall see it and be vexed; he shall gnash his teeth; his courage shall fail. The desire of the wicked shall come to nothing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gnashing teeth is a pretty unique description that only appears a few times in Tanach: once\u00a0 earlier in Psalms, and once in Lamentations.\u00a0 Psalm 35:16 &#8220;With impious, mocking grimace they gnash their teeth at me.&#8221; Lamentations 2:16: &#8220;All your enemies jeer at you; They hiss and gnash their teeth, And cry: \u201cWe\u2019ve ruined her! Ah, this is the day we hoped for; We have lived to see it!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use in our chapter is unique. In the other two cases, the gnashing is more mocking by the wicked. In our chapter it is almost the opposite. The wicked are gnashing their teeth out of frustration. The author of this psalm is unknown, so it is possible it was written after Lamentations. In that case, the psalmist may be trying to take what had been a bad metaphor and flip it around. If it was written prior to Lamentations, then Jeremiah may have specifically picked this metaphor and chosen to reference the negative use in Psalms 35 to further emphasize the downtrodden state of the Jewish people at the time of the
