Truth. The word truth appears two times in this very short psalm in verse 7 and 8: “His handiwork is truth and justice, <\/span>emet umishpat<\/span><\/em>; all His precepts are enduring\/ well-founded for all eternity, wrought of truth and equity, <\/span>emet veyashar<\/span><\/em>.” What is the difference between “truth and justice” and “truth and equity” that both are mentioned here?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Justice, <\/span>mishpat<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> is usually used in the context of basic civil laws. This is opposed to the edicts that seem to have no moral reasoning. Linking God to justice emphasizes divine compassion rather than strict punishment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Equity, <\/span>yashar<\/span><\/em>, is usually used in the context of what seems right in the eyes of God- such as Deut. 6:18: ” Do what is right and good, <\/span>hatov vehayashar<\/span><\/em>,\u00a0 in the sight of the LORD, that it may go well with you\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Now we can see the desire to use both of these phrases. Truth and justice characterize compassion of God to humanity, and truth and equity are reflected in a person\u2019s actions towards God. Both of these are linked by one thing- truth. God acting with truth leads to justice for people, and people living a life of truth brings them toward an equitable relationship with
