I have chosen to concentrate on v. 6: \u201cThe strength of His deeds He related to His nation, to render unto them the inheritance of nations,\u201d because of the prominent place it occupies in one of the most revered works of medieval Jewish literature: Rashi\u2019s commentary on the Torah, where it appears in the commentary on the first verse of the first chapter of the first book.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Isaac said: The Torah should have commenced with: “This month shall be unto you the first of the months” (Exodus 12:2), which is the first commandment given to Israel. What is the reason, then, that it commences with the account of the Creation? Because of “He declared to His people the strength of His works to give them the heritage of nations\u201d (Psalms 111:6). For should the peoples of the world say to Israel, “You are robbers, because you took by force the lands of the seven nations of Canaan,” Israel may reply to them, “All the earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He; He created it and gave it to whom He pleased. When it pleased Him, He gave it to them, and when it pleased Him, He took it from them and gave it to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

If possession is, proverbially, \u201cnine tenths of the law,\u201d could not the seven nations of Canaan have made the identical claim before they were dispossessed? Not to speak of the several transfers of possession that have occurred since Joshua\u2019s conquest: \u201cWhen it pleased Him, He gave it to us, and when it pleased Him, He took it from us and gave it to\u2026\u201d Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Mongols, Turks, and British? And if we have already been dispossessed of it twice, how can we be certain that our current occupation is not transitory, too?<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, these questions seem to have occurred already to Ramban, and thus, he wrote in his own commentary to this very same verse: \u201c<\/span>If so, it is appropriate that when a people continues to sin, it will be destroyed from its place and another people will inherit his land, for this is the law of God in the world from always.\u201d And citing the verse on which we are focusing, he concluded:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0“And He gave them the lands of nations and the labor of peoples they shall inherit so that they shall keep His laws and guard His instructions.” That is to say, He chased out those who rebelled against Him, and settled in His servants, so that they would know that by serving Him they possess it\u2014and if they sin against Him, the land will vomit them up as it vomited up the nation before them.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no carte blanche to the Land of
