Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710\u20131736), Confitebor tibi Domine (\u201cMy praise to You, God\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1731 or 1732, Naples Italy was struck by a series of destructive earthquakes. In November 1732, the town\u2019s burghers declared St. Emydius, the saint defending against earthquakes, as the patron saint of the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For the ceremony of the proclamation, the young composer Pergolesi was invited to compose a festive mass, along with several chapters of psalms for the vespers, evening service, including \u201cDixit Dominus\u201d (Ps. 110), and the \u201cConfitebor,\u201d Ps. 111. He had only 19 days to compose, but it seems that he fulfilled the task, since all these compositions were performed at the Church of Santa Maria della Stella, on New Year\u2019s eve, 1733.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if the story lacks some historical veracity, it helps explain how Pergolesi, who died tragically at the age of 26, managed to write enough to be considered the most important composers of the first generation of the \u201cclassic style.\u201d It can be said that the style that would lead to Haydn and Mozart began here, in Naples, with the birth of the \u201copera buffa,\u201d a genre that Pergolesi was a master of, and which soon spread to all of Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

We can sense the presence of the operatic style in the sublime text of today\u2019s psalm (111), and in particular in the virtuosi solo parts that we can here in the accompanying clip, which features particularly accomplished soloists (among them the acclaimed contra-tenor Philippe Jaroussky).<\/span><\/p>\n

The mood is somber as the choir enters with \u201cThe LORD is gracious and compassionate\u201d (verse 4), and at \u201cHe sent redemption to His people\u201d (verse 9, the fourth section of the work). The fifth part, \u201cSanctus,\u201d which is based on the end of verse 9, and until the end of the section is unusual in its dramatic atmosphere, which is emphasized by the steady, heavy rhythm in the strings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Immediately following sections of the doxology are heard, which are not part of Psalms, but are based on musicalsections that have appeared in the work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The conclusion features a brilliant duet between the two soloists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
