The literal translation is “rightful” or “righteous king.” Yet, “Melchizedek” is also a character from Tanach. In Genesis 14, after the battle of the four kings and five kings, we read: “And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was a priest of God Most High.” (Genesis 14:18). We learn that Melchizedek is both a priest and a king. In verse four of Psalm 110 we have a reference to both a priest and a king as well, which suggest that we may be talking about the personality mentioned in Genesis, and not simply a “king of righteousness.” Verse 5 also talks about God crushing kings, which seems to be another reference to the battle of the four kings and five kings from Genesis.

However, this seems like an odd reference. Why would King David reference this obscure character from Genesis? There is a disagreement among the commentators about who exactly was Malkitzedek/ Melchizedek. Some say that he was actually a priest of God from Jerusalem. This is indicated by his blessing to Abram “He blessed him, saying, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth/ And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your foes into your hand” (Genesis 14:19-20). But an astute reading of Abram’s response is also telling: “I swear to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth” (Genesis 14:22). Abram adds the name of God to Melchizedek’s blessing. Abram is telling those assembled that it was not just one of any of the local gods who saved him, it was The God.

Perhaps that is what King David is alluding to here. No “local god” is responsible for his success.
