In Psalm 110, the psalmist does not request that God save him from his enemies, the theme of\u00a0 many other psalms. Instead, the text describes how in the event that God takes up his cause, his opponents will be violently and decisively dispensed with, by: (v. 2) God\u2019s holding sway; (v. 3) providing allies when the battle takes place; (v. 4) relentlessly fulfilling His oath to advance the Psalmist\u2019s interests; (v. 5) crushing those who rise up against him; (v. 6) heaping dead bodies of enemies and (v. 7) holding His head high as a result of the resounding defeat that He has meted out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, an image that appears in v. 1 is rather ambiguous and requires clarification: \u201cOf David. A psalm. The LORD said to my lord, \u201cSit at My right hand while I make your enemies your footstool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

How is turning adversaries into one\u2019s \u201cfootstool\u201d comparable to the other decisive divine interventions mentioned in the Psalm? Furthermore, when considering the usage of such a metaphor in the Bible, it appears to always be used to describe God\u2019s dominance over His creation, rather than a human being whose enemies have been defeated by God:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThus said the LORD: The heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool\u201d (Isaiah 66:1).<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cExalt the LORD our God and bow down to His footstool; He is holy!\u201d (Ps. 99:5)<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cLet us enter His abode, bow at His footstool\u201d (Ibid. 132:7).<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps, Psalm 110 should be read as a progression, paralleling the verses of rebuke in Leviticus 26:14-5, 18, 21, 23, and 27. The first stage of God\u2019s hoped-for assistance will render the psalmist\u2019s enemies merely subservient to him, comparable to a \u201cfootstool.\u201d They will lose their threatening stance and become docile and manageable. But should they persist in their malevolence, God\u2019s \u201cgloves come off\u201d and a much worse fate will await them, as outlined in the psalm\u2019s subsequent verses.<\/span><\/p>\n

The psalmist doesn\u2019t immediately condemn individuals and groups who viciously oppose him to some terrible fate. Perhaps he takes his cue from God Himself, about whom it is stated: \u201cIs it my desire that a wicked person shall die?\u2014says the Lord GOD. It is rather that he shall turn back from his ways and live\u201d (Ezekial 18:23).<\/span><\/p>\n

Even the Talmudic heroine Beruria begs her husband to be more patient and compassionate with regard to his tormentors. In Berachot 10a, after Rabbi Meir prays for the deaths of those who apparently enjoyed berating him, Beruria criticizes him <\/span>in light of Psalms 104:35<\/span><\/a>, which states that it is the \u201csins\u201d and \u201cevil\u201d rather than the \u201csinners\u201d and \u201cevil-doers\u201d that one should wish to cease to exist. Taking his wife\u2019s words to heart, R. Meir prayed that his enemies repent, and they did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It would be wonderful if life were that
