David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\nDavid might have written this psalm about how God helped him defeat the Philistines in battle at the very beginning of his reign.<\/p>\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\nPsalm of Royalty&#8211;This psalm describes how God reigns supreme. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as King of Israel.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\nKing David speaks here of God\u2019s promise to come to his aid in defeating his enemies. This psalm is understood by some as a reference to God\u2019s kindness to our forefather Abraham, upon successfully defeating the \u201cfour kings\u201d. Still others see the singer as addressing the future victories of Mashiach (Messiah), the son of David.<\/p>\n<p>This psalm consists of seven verses, subdivided into two parts.<br \/>\nIn verses 1-3, King David speaks of God\u2019s assurance that He will defeat his enemies, through the imagery of symbols of royalty.<br \/>\nIn verses 4-7, he addresses the obligations imposed upon the king: to judge his people righteously and to fight the enemies of Israel.<\/p>\n<p><em>Introductory Words:<\/em><br \/>\n\u05de\u05d6\u05de\u05d5\u05e8&#8211;Mizmor&#8211;Musical Accompaniment<\/p>\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim&#8211;When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\nFor peace with one\u2019s enemies&#8211;Verse 1 states: \u201cWait at My right until I make your enemies a stool for your feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Where in the Siddur:<\/em><br \/>\nVerses 6 and 7 comprise part of Av Harachamim, a memorial prayer recited towards the conclusion of Shacharit (morning service) of Shabbat.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excerpted from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Your Lips To God\u2019s Ears<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Reuben Ebrahimoff.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":79908,"id":79908,"title":"psalms -
