After some reflection, though, the reader is confronted with the reality that this is also how they treat God","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 109 seems to follow a similar pattern we have seen before. David laments the fact that the wicked treat him with ill will. He then calls out for God to attack the wicked leaders and save him from their double dealing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a second read of the first five verses shows once again how King David is very deliberate with his words:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For the wicked and the deceitful open their mouth against me; they speak to me with lying tongue\/ They encircle me with words of hate; they attack me without cause\/ They answer my love with accusation and I must stand judgment\/ They repay me with evil for good, with hatred for my love.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this really just David lamenting the wicked? These verses also read like they could be spoken by God himself: for all the good H\/he gives to Israel, for all the love H\/he shows them, they repay H\/him with evil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reader at first feels sympathy for King David and his plight. How could these people treat King David in such a way! How could they repay his love with deceit?! After some reflection, though, the reader is confronted with the reality that this is also how they treat God. They return God&#8217;s love with the same deceit and evil. The hope then is that the people learn to change their ways, so that the prayer for punishment of the second half of the psalm does not come to fruition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":false,"embedded_video":"","video_duration":"","show_fb_comments":true,"credit_media":""},"tile":{"top_caption":"Repaying Love with Evil","main_caption":"How could these people treat King David in such a way!
