This morning we\u2019re quiet,
\nSad maybe but quiet, weaned
\nFrom the dramatic breast of torment<\/p>\n

That kept us tossing
\nTowards and away from each other all night,
\nExposing our nakedness.<\/p>\n

As the covers we fought over in our sleep
\nBecame smaller and smaller,
\nAnd maybe you hurt me badly, maybe you
\nsaid<\/p>\n

And failed to say
\nWords I can never forgive, maybe you left
\nBruises on my breasts,<\/p>\n

And maybe my love for you
\nBecame a kind of hatred, my clinging
\nNarcissism, maybe I was sick<\/p>\n

Of you and maybe you
\nWere responsible for my sickness
\nAnd maybe my sickness<\/p>\n

Was a form of love
\nYou had no choice but to reject<\/p>\n

For both of our sakes, for the sake of what\u2019s left,<\/p>\n

Lying quietly this morning, bruised and stripped,<\/p>\n

Nursed<\/p>\n

By the milk of aftermath, the sad but
\nnourishing quiet<\/p>\n

That flows from the breasts
\nOf longing and disappointment,
\nYour disappointment that my longing for you<\/p>\n

Couldn\u2019t lead me to accept
\nThe body you bestowed upon me like a
\nkiss,<\/p>\n

A hard kiss, a kiss with teeth and invading
\ntongue,<\/p>\n

But a kiss nonetheless,
\nAnd my longing to disappoint
\nThe presumption you call love<\/p>\n

No matter what you do to me,
\nNo matter what I\u2019ve said,
\nWe lie here in the quiet, soul to soul,<\/p>\n

One an exploding universe,
\nOne a sliver of glass,
\nClinging to each other<\/p>\n

In the physical silence
\nOf this narrow bed.<\/p>\n
