David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.

When and Why:
David wrote this psalm when he passed the throne on to Solomon. In it, he blesses SOlomon that he should be a fair and merciful judge of the people.

Genre:
Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.

Chapter Summary:
King David again speaks harshly of those who rise up against him. At the same time, he speaks on behalf of all Jews who have suffered harsh burdens and have been vilified by the nations. He implores God to aid him, because he is poor and needy, and his heart is broken.

This psalm consists of thirty-one verses, subdivided into five parts. The first half of verse 1 serves as an introduction.
In verse 1, the Psalmist beseeches God to not be silent.
In verses 2-5, he laments his being pursued by enemies without cause.
In verses 6-20, he further curses the wicked enemies.
In verses 21-29, he then prays for God’s help.
In verses 30 and 31, he concludes with a vow to offer his thanks to God after He sends salvation.

Introductory Words:
למנצח–Lemnatsei’ach–To the Conductor
מזמור–Mizmor–Musical Accompaniment

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
To ward off an enemy–Verse 6 states: “Appoint over him a wicked man, and may an adversary stand at his right.”

Talmud on Tehillim:
Verse 22: “and my heart is dead within me.”
The Talmud, Berachot 61b, deduces from this verse that the righteous are ruled entirely by their good inclination, whereas the wicked are ruled entirely by their evil inclination. David, explains the Talmud, had such mastery over his evil inclination that it was as if it had died inside of him.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff.

psalms -
