Indeed, vs. 2-6 here are nearly identical to 57:8-12, and vs.7-14 replicate 60:6-14. Robert Alter offered the following distinction among these several psalms: \u201cPsalm 57 is an individual supplication, and Psalm 60 is a national supplication,\u201d noting that \u201cIt remains unclear why sections of both poems should have been spliced together to make the present psalm\u201d (260).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alter also acknowledged his reliance, here, on a textual emendation, one that is worth noting. He translated v.2 as \u201cMy heart is firm, O God, let me sing and hymn <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with my inward being<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too.\u201d Compare NJPS: \u201c\u2026 I will sing and chant a hymn <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with all my soul<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d while OJPS reads: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with all my glory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d The disagreement centers on the vocalization of the last Hebrew word in the verse, whose consonants are K-B-D-Y.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verbal root K-B-D (the \u201cY\u201d is clearly a pronominal suffix and does not factor into our analysis) is defined as \u201cto be heavy, weighty, burdensome, honored,\u201d and its best known noun derivative is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kavod<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning \u201cabundance, honor, glory.\u201d That accounts for both JPS translations, \u201csoul\u201d and \u201cglory.\u201d Alter\u2019s translation, however, presupposes an alternate reading of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kabeid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose primary meaning is \u201cthe liver.\u201d Indeed, the liver was so-named, apparently, because it is the largest internal organ of the body. In the ancient world, just as the heart was the seat of the intellect (cf. Exodus 28:3) and wisdom reposed in the kidneys (Job 38:36), the liver was the seat of the emotions, hence Alter\u2019s rendition: \u201cinward being.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","image":{"ID":88637,"id":88637,"title":"ps108-joy
