Our<\/span> psalm<\/span><\/a> begins with the superscription \u201cA song. A psalm of David.\u201d The continuation largely parallels<\/span> Psalms 57:8-12<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Psalms 60:7-14<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In our psalm, David\u2019s invocation: \u201cAwake, O harp and lyre\u2026! (<\/span>verse 3<\/span><\/a>, an echo of<\/span> Psalm 57:9<\/span><\/a>), calls up the image of King David playing the lyre. Remarkably, just such a depiction was discovered in the Gaza Synagogue<\/span> Mosaic_of_David<\/span><\/a>. This image was appropriately incorporated in a<\/span> commemorative medal<\/span><\/a> celebrating the 3000<\/span>th<\/span> anniversary of Jerusalem as the City of David.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on the Scriptural expression \u201cAwake, O harp and lyre! I will wake the dawn\u201d,<\/span> Talmud Bavli Berakhot 3b-4a<\/span><\/a> describes a lyre hanging over David\u2019s bed. At midnight, the northern wind (see<\/span> Song of Songs 4:16<\/span><\/a> cited in<\/span> Zohar<\/span><\/a>) would cause the lyre to play, awaking David to rise from his bed to study Torah until the first rays of dawn. This Talmudic tradition led to the custom of<\/span> Tikkun Haztot<\/span><\/a> (see<\/span> Mishnah Berurah<\/span><\/a> 1:9). According to<\/span> Kitzur Shulchan Arukh<\/span><\/a>: \u201cWhoever studies Torah at night, the Divine Presence is before him, as it is said: \u201cArise, cry out in the night. At the beginning of the watches, pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord!\u201d (<\/span>Lamentations 2:19<\/span><\/a>). This verse signifies that the Divine Presence is before us at that time. Our Sages, of blessed memory said: Whoever studies Torah at night is called a servant of the Lord, as it is written: “Now bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord who stand nightly in the house of the Lord\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 134:1<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

There are various early descriptions of the<\/span> harp (<\/span>nevel<\/span><\/em>) and lyre (<\/span>kinnor<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/a>. Ancient Near Eastern texts and archaeological excavations, especially from<\/span> Ur<\/span><\/a>, indicate that such musical instruments had from three to thirteen strings. A royal<\/span> bull-headed lyre<\/span><\/a>, made of gold and other precious materials, may have sounded something like a modern bass viol. The figure of an elongated harp with three strings is found on a bronze coin minted during the Bar-Kochba Rebellion (134\u2013135 CE). Another coin from the same period shows an apparently six-string harp. Moreover, the Davidic lyre has been extensively compared to various ancient<\/span> Greek<\/span><\/a> stringed instruments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer 31<\/span><\/a> notes that the strings of David\u2019s harp were made from the sinews of the ram offered by Abraham instead of his son Isaac.<\/span> Talmud Bavli Arakhin 13b<\/span><\/a> records that the harp played in the Temple had seven strings. But, the Messiah will play on an additional eighth string, as it says: \u201cFor the leader, on the <\/span>sheminit<\/em> <\/span>[eighth string]\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 12:1<\/span><\/a>). Finally, in the World to Come, the instrument that will accompany the singing of the never ending \u201cSabbath\u201d Psalm will have ten strings, as it says: \u201cA psalm. A song for the sabbath day\u2026With a ten-stringed harp, with voice and lyre together\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 92:1-4<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n
