This fourfold repetition led the Talmud to instruct that \u201cFour are required to express gratitude: seafarers, travelers across the desert, the ill when they are cured, and one who was released from jail\u201d (Berachot 54b).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each category corresponds to a series of verses in our psalm. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some lost their way in the wilderness, in the wasteland\u201d (4) are the travelers; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some lived in deepest darkness, bound in cruel irons\u201d (10) are the prisoners; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He gave an order and healed them\u201d (20) are the ill; and \u201cOthers go down to the sea in ships\u201d (24) are the seafarers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In<\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.com\/book\/21088\/making-haste-from-babylon-by-nick-bunker\/9780307266828\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making Haste From Babylon<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nick Bunker related that the Pilgrim passengers on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayflower,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fleeing religious persecution in England, brought along their principal source of religious inspiration and comfort: the Bible. One edition of the Bible (published in 1618), known to have been in the possession of none other than William Bradford, who would later serve as governor of Plymouth Colony, was supplemented by the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annotations<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a Puritan scholar named Henry Ainsworth (1571\u20131622). Shortly after their landfall in November 1620, Bradford led the new arrivals in thanking God for the safe journey that brought them to America by reciting verses from Psalm 107.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiously, Ainsworth&#8217;s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annotations<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to verse 31 of that psalm contains a verbatim translation of Maimonides\u2019s Mishneh Torah, Hilkhot Berachot 10:8, which makes the identical stipulation we cited from the Talmud. Citing additional verses from the psalm, Bradford compared the Pilgrims&#8217; arrival in America to the Jews&#8217; crossing of the Sinai Desert, corresponding to &#8220;wayfaring men, when they are come to the inhabited land&#8221;\u2014one of the four talmudic conditions requiring thanksgiving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would appear, then, that the very first prayer the Pilgrims recited immediately upon their arrival in the New World had its origins in a distinctly Jewish practice. Accordingly, Bunker considered this prayer service to be the original &#8220;Thanksgiving&#8221; \u2014a service which predated, by a full year, the three days of feasting that served as the basis for the current American holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":88565,"id":88565,"title":"ps107-puritan
