  1. Bench gomel<\/em>. \u201cRav Yehuda said that Rav said: Four must offer thanks to God with a thanks-offering and a special blessing. They are: Seafarers, those who walk in the desert, and one who was ill and recovered, and one who was incarcerated in prison and went out. All of these appear in the verses of a psalm (Psalms 107)\u201d (B Berachot, 54b). The text continues –\u00a0 \u201cWhat blessing does he recite? Rav Yehuda said: Blessed is\u2026Who bestows acts of loving-kindness. Abaye said: And he must offer thanks before ten people…\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Chorus lines – same, but different<\/em>. The line \u201cIn their adversity they cried to the LORD, and He rescued them from their troubles\u201d repeats with some changes. Later: \u201cHe saved them\u2026\u201d See verses 6, 13, 19, 28.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Between the individual and the collective<\/em>. The psalm goes from the collective (the \u201credeemed of the LORD,\u201d and the ingathering of the exiles) to individuals (people who were saved), and generalizes about Divine providence in the world. Does the movement in the psalm seem natural?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. 7 backwards letters<\/em> (\u201cnun<\/em>\u201d). Verses 23-28 and 40 are marked, from the early days of biblical manuscripts, each with a backwards letter \u05e0 (<\/span>nun<\/span><\/em>). We encountered this rare sign 547 chapters ago in the song of the Ark, in Numbers 10. What does it look like? See the Bomberg manuscript image on today\u2019s page. What does it signify? It could be the ancient precursor of the parenthesis. Why are these verses in parentheses? Good question (for one idea see Robert Alter\u2019s post).<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Happy Independence Day<\/em>! The Chief Rabbinate of Israel decided that this psalm should be read during the prayers on Yom Ha\u2019atzmaut, Israel\u2019s independence day.
