It speaks of the miracles and splendor of the messianic age. Viewed by some as an allusion to the ingathering of past exiles, it perhaps also refers to the war of Gog and Magog preceding and ushering in Mashiach (Messiah). It is against this backdrop that the singer calls upon those worthy of God’s deliverance to proclaim their thanks.

This psalm consists of forty-three verses, subdivided into four parts.
In verses 1-3, the psalmist proclaims: “Hodu LaHashem ki tov”– “Give thanks to Adonoy, for He is good’, an oft repeated refrain of Tehillim. He then declares that in the future, all ingrathered exiles will indeed fulfill this charge.
In verses 4-32, the body of the psalm, he describes the four categories of individuals who must thank God for delivery: those who cross the desert, prisoners, the sick, and those who descend to the sea.
In verses 33-41, he describes God’s acts of lovingkindness, expressed in His overseeing the natural order in the world.
In verses 42 and 43, the singer closes with a recognition of how the righteous rejoice while the wicked are silenced, and thus calls upon the congregation to contemplate God’s acts of lovingkindness.

Introductory Words:
הודו–Hodu–Give thanks

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
For a chronic fever–Verse 20 states: “He sends His word and heals them, and delivers them from their destruction.”

Where in the Siddur:
Verses 10, 14 and 17-21 are found in Kapparot (Atonement Service) recited by some on Erev (the eve of) Yom Kippur.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff.

psalms -
