Our psalm closes out the fourth of the five sections of the Book of Psalms (see <\/span>our comments to Psalm 72 <\/span><\/a>on the fivefold division). Another in a series of historical reflections, it starts out to be a replicate of its predecessor, albeit with a significant twist. Whereas Psalm 105 praises God for His miraculous interventions on behalf of an ostensibly deserving Israel, 106 (from v.6 on) is replete with references to the people\u2019s many transgressions and lapses of faith beginning with the Exodus (7 ff.), continuing through the wilderness experience (13 ff.), and concluding with the conquest or, to be more accurate, the failure to conquer (34) that allowed for their subsequent involvement in idolatry (35 ff.).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, 105 ends with a celebratory \u201cHe gave them the lands of nations; they inherited the wealth of peoples, that they might keep His laws and observe His teachings. Hallelujah\u201d (44-45), while 106 closes with a wistful \u201cDeliver us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the nations, to acclaim Your holy name, to glory in Your praise\u201d (47).<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim\u2019s reading of our psalm led him to reflect on why God would continue to support Israel even after all its infidelities.<\/span><\/p>\n

This psalm is connected to the preceding one that reported on how God kept the covenant by taking them out of Egypt and giving them the land. It omitted the remainder of the miracles He performed for them after the Exodus, such as splitting the sea and the Jordan and the like. For these, [the psalmist] called upon them to praise God because the grace He had begun to bestow on them continued even after they sinned, as recorded in v.45: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>He was mindful of His covenant and in His great faithfulness relented.\u201d God is good to His people and His grace is eternal, whereas they failed to recognize His grace and they rebelled and angered Him in each and every generation, to wit: \u201cYours, O Lord, is the righteousness, while ours is shamefacedness\u201d (Daniel 9:7).<\/span><\/p>\n

Radak spotted a seeming contradiction between \u201cWho can tell the mighty acts of the Lord, proclaim all His praises?\u201d (2), implying that they cannot <\/span>all<\/span><\/i> be proclaimed, and another verse, \u201cSo that in the gates of Fair Zion I might tell <\/span>all<\/span><\/i> Your praise\u201d (9:15). His resolution is that in the earlier psalm, David was referring to acts God had performed for him, personally, so he was able to enumerate them all. Here, however, the reference is to all the deeds that God had done for the nation of Israel, and those are innumerable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":88502,"id":88502,"title":"ps106-human
