And He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; and He led them through the depths \u2026&#8221; (Psalm 106:8-9)<\/p>\n<p>\nHow well I remember that night \u2014 the moon, aflame,<br \/>\nAs the prophet stretched his hand over the sea;<br \/>\nThe waves, obeying, split to the right, to the left.<br \/>\nMy father grabbed my hand, and my sister\u2019s, too,<br \/>\nWhen without a word, we left the beach behind.<\/p>\n<p>A wall of water, forty cubits high,<br \/>\nArose as straight and sharp as desert cliffs;<br \/>\nA clan of dolphins swam to the edge of the wall<br \/>\nTo stare at people crossing the sea on foot<br \/>\nOn a sea-floor drier than desert dunes at noon.<\/p>\n<p>I thrust my hand into the liquid wall<br \/>\nTo touch a yellow sea-horse flashing by;<br \/>\nA school of eels twisted their bodies\u2019 shapes<br \/>\nTo form black letters of words that only a child<br \/>\nCould understand and read as praise of God.<\/p>\n<p>We children of Israel gazed at a huge blue-whale<br \/>\nThat circled nearby and solemnly sang a psalm;<br \/>\nA flock of fish in rainbow colors swam<br \/>\nWarily by, amazed at people below<br \/>\nWho walked through the sea in the light of the moon afire.<\/p>\n<p>All night we children of Israel advanced in awe.<br \/>\nBehind us, pillars of fire and cloud stood guard,<br \/>\nOur shields defending us from Pharaoh\u2019s hosts.<br \/>\nMy father and mother laughed, \u2014 or cried, \u2014 or both,<br \/>\nLeaving behind deserts of Egyptian salt.<\/p>\n<p>How well I remember that night \u2014 the moon, ablaze,<br \/>\nLit up our path as we walked on the floor of the sea.<br \/>\nI was only a child of five or six; since then<br \/>\nSeventy years have passed; but I close my eyes \u2014<br \/>\nMy father\u2019s
