In <\/span>our opening comments to Psalm 78<\/span><\/a>, we listed several examples of biblical poems that commemorate historical events. This psalm, too, is such a poem, describing, sequentially: God\u2019s covenant with the patriarchs (6-15); the Egyptian famine and Joseph\u2019s role in its alleviation (16-22); Israel\u2019s arrival and enslavement (23-25); the mission of Moses and Aaron and the plagues (26-36); the exodus and wilderness experiences (37-43); and the conquest of the promised land (44).<\/span><\/p>\n

Radak recognized the first 15 verses as identical with 1 Chronicles 16:8-22, which are introduced as the song of praise that was commissioned by King David from \u201cAsaph and his kinsmen\u201d on the occasion of the return of the Ark of the Lord from the home of Obed-Edom the Gittite (2 Samuel 6:12), where it reposed after its journey back from Philistine captivity was interrupted by the death of Uzzah (see <\/span>our comments there<\/span><\/a>). However, whereas our psalm, as noted, continues on its historical retrospective, 1 Chronicles 16 segues into what appears to be another psalm-like poem: \u201cSing to the LORD, all the earth. proclaim His victory day after day. Tell of His glory among the nations, His wondrous deeds among all peoples\u201d (23-24).<\/span><\/p>\n

Recalling Moses\u2019s brief ode to the Holy Ark: \u201cArise, O Lord, and may Your enemies be scattered and may Your foes flee before You\u201d (Numbers 10:35), the historical and poetic references to victory, glory, and wondrous deeds provide an explanation for why these two poems might have been chosen for recital on the occasion of its
