The heavens are being spread; the deep giving way to water and dry mountains; beasts, and birds, and people, oh my! The echoes of the creation story from the book of Genesis are clear. Here, that early account of creation is given a fresh gloss. If Genesis 1 offered us a detailed log of the happenings of the first six of days of creation, then Psalms 104 is taking a different tone. What imagery and color and sensual description was missing from the first version is finally provided. The reader breathes a sigh of relief; the glory of creation is given voice in narration at last.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Psalms 104 telling of creation, there are colors and there are sounds and there are movements. Creations interact with other creations: birds make nests and goats jump on the mountains. The sun rises and the sun sets on a world where each creation plays its own part in the balance of things. In this version, creation still has an order to it, of course. But the reader does not need a series of formulaic repetitions to make us see that each element of the earth is operating in the same system. Instead, we appreciate the order of the things in the way that the ecosystem functions: people out all day, lions out at night, each in their right place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps this is the point. Genesis 1 tells us the story from God\u2019s perspective: all was planned, and all went according to plan. Good. But the Psalms are not written from God\u2019s perspective. The Psalms give voice to humanity\u2019s point of view. No human being can understand how all of creation was planned and executed; that is for God to know. But we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> see how it is all working down here- how the \u201cearth is full of Your creations,\u201d and how the seasons recur, and how sweet that wine tastes. It is with this perspective that we are eager to
