Psalm 104 has a holistic and ecological vision of nature which should be better known.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The psalm suggests that the familiar world of natural phenomena and creatures in which we exist emerged from a violent combat. In its mythologized description of primordial combat, creation was not so much an act of pure will, beginning in the mind of God, as it is portrayed in Genesis 1, but rather a necessary defense of God\u2019s own boundary from the forces that would seek to overwhelm God. Having created the world as an act of struggle and as a place in which divinity can safely exist and thrive, God\u2019s new post-heroic role in the world is to animate the world daily, by establishing a balance between settings and elements within those settings that nurture, and creatures that thrive amidst such surroundings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You make the grass grow for the cattle<\/span>
\n<\/span> and herbage for man\u2019s labor,<\/span>
\n<\/span> that he may get food out of the earth\u2013\u2013<\/span>
\n<\/span> wine that cheers the hearts of men<\/span>
\n<\/span> oil that makes the face shine<\/span>
\n<\/span> and bread that sustains man\u2019s life.<\/span>
\n<\/span> The trees of the LORD drink their fill,<\/span>
\n<\/span> the cedars of Lebanon, His own planting,<\/span>
\n<\/span> where birds make their nests,<\/span>
\n<\/span> the stork has her home in the junipers.<\/span>
\n<\/span> The high mountains are for wild goats;<\/span>
\n<\/span> the crags are a refuge for rock badgers.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the ecological vision of this psalmist, human beings are one among many creatures, not the crown of creation. Just as God provides grass for cattle and goats, so God\u2019s creation provides for humans, the natural materials\u2013\u2013grapes, olives, wheat and barley\u2013\u2013out of which the things that sustain human life\u2013\u2013wine, oil and bread\u2013\u2013are made.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The overarching order that subsumes both humans and beasts applies to time, as it does to place: \u201cYou bring on darkness and it is night, when all the beasts of the forests stir…When the sun rises, they come and couch in their dens.\u201d With the lions asleep and hidden away in the daytime, human beings are free to roam about and do what they need to do to survive. It is a world where the fit will survive, and God has seen to it that every species is fitted to its environment, no more, nor less so than human beings.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this beautiful vision, the wisdom of God is evident in the harmony among God\u2019s creations, the many creatures and their sustainable environments. It might be said, then, that global sustainability, a term that has emerged as especially important in our age, is tantamount to being the wisdom of God, and is eminently worth being emulated by us human beings.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":88413,"id":88413,"title":"ps104-ego
