Psalm 104 celebrates creation. It opens with a universal declaration of praise: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Bless the LORD, O my soul; O LORD, my God, You are very great; You are clothed in glory and majesty\u201d (1), and then proceeds to extol the virtues of God\u2019s universe in sequential order of the acts of creation recorded in Genesis 1.<\/span>

God made the two great lights, the greater light to dominate the day and the lesser light to dominate the night, and the stars (16)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows when to set (19)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

5<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

God said, \u201cLet the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and birds that fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky\u201d (20)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

You bring on darkness and it is night, when all the beasts of the forests stir. The lions roar for prey, seeking their food from God (20-21)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\u201cLet us make man in our image, after our likeness\u201d (26)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

Man then goes out to his work, to his labor until the evening (23)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n


\n<\/span>However, as observed by Yehudah Eisenberg, the sequence of creation is but the framework for our psalm; it is not its purpose, which is to describe earthly existence as three cycles. The first, vs. 20-22, speak of the consecutive exchanges of light and darkness. These are paralleled in vs. 28-29 by the interchange of life and death. Finally, giving meaning to the first two circles, are the closing verses: \u201cMay my prayer be pleasing to Him; I will rejoice in the LORD. May sinners disappear from the earth, and the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Hallelujah\u201d (34-35),<\/span> which establishes the religious and spiritual purpose of all life: to do that which is right and just before
