David covers everything from the waters to the mountains, animals and agriculture, the sun, the moon, darkness and light, and speaks to the miraculous interdependency of all God’s creations. He ends his recitation with the words “How great are Your works, God! You have made them all with wisdom and the earth is full of Your possessions (104:24)!” David’s awe in the world is palpable throughout this psalm.

When he completes his passionate review of the glory of the world, David adds one more observation: “Sinners will be destroyed from the earth and evil will be no more (104:35).” David seems to be acknowledging that evil, and by extension evildoers, are also one of God’s creations. Evil is not, to most of us, in the same realm of majestic mountains and sustaining waters but to David, its existence in God’s world is as valid as all the wonders he has just enumerated. But what evokes the strongest praise from David is his surety that God will destroy evil. For that, David says not only “Barchi nafshi” but concludes with “Hallelujah” (104:35).

The word “Hallelujah” derives from “Hallel – praise” plus the two-letter form of God’s name, and appears only in the book of Psalms, with this being the very first instance. It is such an authentically evocative word, that although it has been adopted by many cultures, there is rarely an attempt to translate it.

Rav Kook suggests that as long as evil exists, God’s creation is incomplete. To support this explanation of incompleteness, Rav Kook points to the use of the two-letter name of God appended to “Hallel” instead of the four-letter Tetragrammaton, reserved for Messianic days. David’s Hallelujah is specifically tied to the time when God will remove evil from the world, and His creation will be complete. Says Kook, a world in which evil existed but was overcome is a greater world than one in which evil never existed to begin with. David understands that evil, and overcoming it, is part of God’s plan.

While David is alive he will sing God’s praises (104:33), but when “evil will be no more (104:35)” and the perfect world is complete, we will all join him in exclaiming “Hallelujah.”

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/ps104-hallelujah.jpg","1536x1536-width":950,"1536x1536-height":729,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/ps104-hallelujah.jpg","2048x2048-width":950,"2048x2048-height":729
Evil is part of God’s creation -
