Commanding the powers\u00a0 of nature \u2013 fire, wind and water \u2013 God cares for creation in very concrete ways. Creation began with God harnessing the once raging primeval waters, thereby allowing orderly life to emerge. Water is then channeled to sustain that life by ensuring an appropriate food supply for all creatures. Grasses grow for cattle, and prey is prepared for lions but humans must labor to obtain their food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bread suitable for human consumption has never sprung nutritious and tasty from the earth. Humans must labor to obtain their food. Grain must be sown and harvested, threshed and winnowed, before it is ground into flour. Only then can bread baking begin.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In industrialized society, a beautifully-risen loaf can be ready in a few hours. But there is an older way, one that concentrates the building blocks of creation \u2013 earth, water, light and life \u2013 in a mixing bowl.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the day after Passover, I measure flour into a bowl, add an equal amount of water, stir, cover (but not too well) and wait.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, there is little visible action. I remove half, add flour and water, stir and wait.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural yeast gradually transforms the flour and water, a few bubbles appear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With patience and a practiced eye, I repeat the process, time and again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a week, maybe more, the effort is repaid. In the early morning light, I lift a damp towel from the large glass bowl and its fragrant, bubbling contents are lively and life-giving. Bread baking begins in earnest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cattle can graze on grasses as they grow, where they grow; but bread to sustain human life and wine to cheer the heart require human labor. This, too, testifies to the wisdom of creation. Food prepared with effort and creativity nourishes not only the body but also the human spirit. It is a pathway to becoming a partner with God in sustaining life and creation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High mountains, the moon and sun, creatures great and small inspire our wonder, prompt our praise. Gazing into a bowl of bubbling starter or rising dough, I am filled with awe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow many are the things You have made, O ETERNAL; You have made them all with wisdom; the earth is full of Your creations\u2026 Bless the ETERNAL, O my soul.
