…What <\/span>maror<\/em> <\/span>means to tell us is that misery is not meaningless, that pain is not pointless punishment, that human anguish has larger dimensions, that the bitter leads to the sweet. In fact, without the foretaste of <\/span>maror, haroset<\/em> <\/span>loses its value. There can be no sweet without bitter, no light without darkness before it, no joy without prior sadness. There can be no wealth without poverty, no faith without doubt, no freedom without slavery, no redemption without exile.<\/span><\/p>\n

…R. Samson Raphael Hirsch saw this idea in a powerful, subtle, and sophisticated interpretation of the famous cry of King David in the Psalms: <\/span>Eli, Eli, lamah azavtani<\/span><\/em>. We usually translate that, \u201cMy God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me.\u201d But, asks R. Hirsch, should not so pious and saintly a Jew as King David accept his lot with love and resignation even to the point of keeping his silence if God forsakes him? He answers that King David was not asking \u201c<\/span>why<\/span> hast Thou forsaken me,\u201d because then the Hebrew word would be <\/span>madua<\/span><\/em>; the word <\/span>lamah<\/span><\/em> means not just <\/span>why<\/span>, but <\/span>wherefore<\/span>. <\/span>Lamah<\/span><\/em>, for what reason, for what purpose, <\/span>\u201cwherefore<\/span> hast Thou forsaken me?\u201d I do not question Your deeds insofar as Your justice is concerned, but what do You want me to <\/span>do<\/span> with all this agony? Suffering must have meaning. My question is therefore: <\/span>Eli, Eli<\/span><\/em>, my God, my God–what meaning and purpose does this particular anguish have for me? What am I expected to accomplish with it?<\/span><\/p>\n
