Verse 7 of our psalm, \u201cHe made known His ways to Moses, His deeds to the children of Israel,\u201d is highly reminiscent of the Torah verse in which Moses beseeched God: \u201cPray let me know Your ways\u201d (Exodus 33:13), just as the following verse here: \u201cThe Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love\u201d (8), resounds with a subsequent Torah verse: \u201cThe Lord! the Lord! a God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and faithfulness\u201d (Exodus 34:6).<\/span><\/p>\n

In an article published in the journal Sinai (1989), Yeshaya Nebenzahl argued that the balance of God\u2019s 13 attributes\u2014enumerated in Exodus 34\u2014could also be identified in our psalm. Here is the substance of his remarks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Exodus 34:7 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span> Psalms 103<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

extending kindness to the thousandth generation<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

But the LORD\u2019s steadfast love is for all eternity toward those who fear Him (17)*<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor has He requited us according to our iniquities (10)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

visits the iniquity of parents upon children and children\u2019s children, upon the third and fourth generations<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

visiting the guilt of the parents upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generations of those who reject Me (Exodus 20:5)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

But the LORD\u2019s steadfast love is for all eternity toward those who fear Him, and His beneficence is for the children\u2019s children of those who keep His covenant and remember to observe His precepts. (17-18)**<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

*Nebenzahl noted that the psalmist has extended (or exaggerated) the kindness from a thousand generations to an eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

**Another of his observations is that in Exodus 34, this final attribute appears only negatively; in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:5), it is somewhat ambivalent (the penitent will escape God\u2019s
