Psalm 103:<\/p>\n

Author: <\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm to thank God for all of the good that God had granted him in his life.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nKing David composed this psalm in praise of God for all the kindness that He performed, and continues to perform, for him and all of Israel. He challenges the reader, indeed all Jews, to know the good ways of the Holy One and to serve Him out of love.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty-two verses, subdivided into five parts.
\nIn verses 1-5, King David instructs his soul to bless God, and tells of the good that God has done for him.
\nIn verses 6-9, he further tells of God\u2019s mercy.
\nIn verses 10-15, he praises God as compassionate to those who fear Him.
\nIn verses 15-19, the Psalmist contrasts the shortness of man\u2019s life with that of the Almighty who is everlasting.
\nIn verses 20-22, King David concludes by calling upon all living creatures to bless God.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor a woman who is barren–Verse 4 states: \u201cWho redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with kindliness and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities:<\/em>
\n\u05de\u05e9\u05d4–Moses–sent by God to redeem the Israelites from Egypt. He received the Torah on behalf of the Israelites, and acted as a mediator between them and God.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 1: \u201c[A Psalm] of David. My soul, bless Adonoy; and all that is within me [bless] His holy Name.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 10a, teaches that King David dwelled in \u201cfive worlds\u201d, corresponding to the five aspects of the human soul: nefesh (soul), ruach (spirit), neshamah (breath), chaya (living essence), and yechidah (unity). The nefesh, explains the Talmud, is instilled while one is but a fetus in the womb. King David therefore offered praise for his time in his mother\u2019s womb, when he was infused with a soul.
\nVerse 20: \u201cmighty in strength who fulfill His word, to hearken to the voice of His word.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Kiddushin 40a, infers from this verse that \u201cone who has an opportunity to have an illicit relationship and overcomes his desire, a miracle will happen for him.\u201d<\/p>\n
