David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.

When and Why:
David might have written this psalm about his own suffering and about the future suffering of the people of Israel who will be in exile.

Genre:
Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.

Chapter Summary:
The psalmist, according to tradition, would chant this psalm whenever he would turn inside himself and vanish from before his pursuers. He would then pour forth this prayer before the Lord, pleading for deliverance from his troubles. Some explain that he is also speaking on behalf of future exiles who, like he, would be victimized and agonized by their enemies.

This psalm consists of twenty-nine verses, subdivided into four parts. The first verse serves as a heading, in which the psalmist depicts his lament as that of a suffering man who pours out his speech to God.
In verses 2-3, the author requests that his prayer be accepted.
In verses 4-12, he describes his distress and grief.
In verses 13-23, he prays for the rebuilding of Zion.
In verses 24-29, he concludes by speaking of the shortness of man’s life in contrast to God’s eternity.

Introductory Word:
תפילה–Tefilah–Prayer

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
For a woman who is barren–Verses 18, 21, and 29 state: “He has turned to the prayer of the lonely one and has not despised their prayer.” “To hear the anguished cry of the prisoner, to liberate those who are doomed to die.” “Your servants children will be securely settled, and their seed will be established before you.”

Where in the Siddur:
Verse 3 is found in the prayer recited by the congregation during Birkat Kohanim (Priestly Blessing).
Verse 14 is found in the introductory paragraphs of Selichot (Penitential Service).
Verse 14 also appears in one of the Kinot (Elegies) of Tisha BeAv (the Fast of the Ninth of Av).
Verse 28 is found in the introduction to the Viduy (Confessional Service) of Yom Kippur.

Talmud on Tehillim:
Verse 24: “He weakened my strength in the way, He shortened my days.”
The Talmud, Gittin 70a, teaches that three things weaken a person’s strength: anxiety, travel and sin.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff.

psalms -
